Did you know that the liver is the only organ in your body that can regenerate itself? It is also the largest internal organ of the body (skin is the largest exterior organ). The liver is located on the upper portion of the abdomen, on the right.
In this post, let’s discuss liver diseases in detail.
What are the different liver conditions?
Liver conditions and diseases are caused by a number of factors. Some of the common viral liver diseases include Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C. In case a patient has an abnormality of the immune system, it can lead to certain liver issues, most commonly autoimmune hepatitis. A number of liver conditions, including Gilbert Syndrome, Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, and Hemochromatosis, are caused by genetic factors, as well. These diseases may impact the liver in different ways and can cause considerable damage. Cancer in other parts of the body also impacts the liver, because all the blood in the body passes through the liver. These are called metastatic factors, while cysts of the liver and other causes may lead to primary liver cancer. Cirrhosis, which is related to chronic alcohol abuse, is one of the major contributors to liver damage. Fatty Liver Disease is also a condition related to the organ.
Knowing the symptoms
There are various signs of liver diseases, while some of the virus-related conditions may not show any signs for weeks or even months. Experts like Dr Guru N Reddy also suggest patients to go for a test or consultation, if they have signs of jaundice like pale/yellow skin, change in urine color and pain in the abdomen. You should also see a doctor if you feel fatigued and tired all the time and have other signs like nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite.
What can lead to liver diseases?
First and foremost, it is important to avoid alcohol abuse. Using some of the steroids, illegal medicines and drugs can also lead to liver damage, and anyone who has got blood transfusion done before 1992 should get tested for liver conditions. Unprotected sex, obesity, exposure to certain chemicals and diabetes have been linked to different liver diseases.
Talk to an experienced doctor if you have any of the signs mentioned above. It is always useful to seek regular consultation from healthcare experts if a person consumes alcohol regularly or has one or many of the autoimmune diseases.
